WAIPAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Two men are in custody following an officer-involved shooting in Waipahu Sunday night.
Police officers responded to a residence on Aniani Place shortly before 7 p.m. after reports of a family argument.
When they arrived, police said a 23-year-old man and woman had been arguing, and the woman wanted the man removed from the residence.
Police said the man left, but another woman followed him and appeared to strike him with what looked like a walking stick.
Then an 18-year-old man emerged from the driveway with a machete and started swinging at the 23-year-old man, who was backing away, police said.
“One officer drew their taser, the second officer drew their firearm, and after several commands to the individual to drop the machete, to stop his actions, he continued,” said Honolulu Police Chief Joe Logan.
“It was a matter of seconds between the time the male appeared with the machete, attacked the individual,” Logan said. “The officers had seconds to react before grave danger was to the victim of the machete attack.
“The officer fired one round and hit the male in the torso. He dropped to the ground immediately. He was disarmed at that point, and medical attention was provided to him,” Logan said.
Honolulu Emergency Medical Services said the 18-year-old man was taken to the hospital in serious condition. He has since been discharged.
Police said he was arrested for attempted murder and remains in custody.
The 18-year-old man and the two women are family members, police said.
The 23-year-old man suffered defensive wounds to his arm, police said. He was arrested for abuse of a household member in relation to the original incident.
Police said the officers involved are stationed in the Pearl City area and have 10 and 16 years respectively in the department. Police said the officer who fired the shot was a crisis intervention trained officer.
An administrative investigation is underway.
